CARL MCGUIRE MEMORIES The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the name Carl McGuire is perfection. Carl was a painstaking rigger who had the ability to visualize impressive ropework and the patience to execute it. When he encountered Bondage Life #1 in 1977, Carl was one of the very first to contact Robert Harmon. On the one hand, he recognized that Robert's genuine, far-more-than-a-picture-book magazine was a landmark achievement for the bondage community; on the other, he candidly suggested that the rigging in several of the features left a great deal to be desired. Robert was delighted by the feedback and challenged Carl to raise the level of the ropework in BLs to come; the rest is history. Carl's favorite model was Maria Tortuga but he also worked with many other fondly-remembered Harmony models of the 1980s to produce exciting photographic contributions to BL and its sister publications. For many media bondage fans in that pre-Internet period, however, Carl was even more highly regarded for his quarterly BL column, "Bound For Hollywood". Over the years, Carl reviewed hundreds of movie and TV bondage scenes, from the silent era to the latest perils of Heather Locklear on "T.J. Hooker" After reading his vivid and witty descriptions, the next step for his followers would be a trip to the video store to search for previously unknown treasures! On a more personal level, I met Carl soon after arriving in Los Angeles to work for Harmony. Over the years since 1985, I was fortunate enough to spend time with Carl on many occasions; he was a courteous, literate and humorous man. We discussed a variety of bondage-related subjects, of course, but our conversations extended beyond, to politics, books, movies, and just about any other facet of life that came to our attention. I always left Carl with the feeling that my brain had been stimulated and my experience enriched. I'm saddened by the knowledge that I'll no longer be able to benefit from Carl's humane intelligence at first hand. But he's left a legacy in our field that's second to none and memories that his many friends will always treasure. --Eric Holman |
BIOGRAPHY Carl
McGuire's association with Harmony Communications
(Harmony
Concepts)
began in 1978.
In various issues of Bondage Life and other Harmony publications, Carl McGuire authored articles on John Willie, William Seabrook, and the "Gor" novels of John Norman. He was the editor of A John Willie Portfolio (1987) and of numerous pictorials on bondage art found in pulp magazines and paperbacks.
As a photographer in the 1970s and '80s, McGuire helped develop the "Harmony look" by working with models such as Laurel Blake, Jennifer West, Simone Devon, Maria Tortuga, Michelle Paige, Libby Curtis, and Tiana Cambridge. He was also editor/photographer of Ladies in Restraint magazine in the 1980s.
The "Bound for Hollywood" columns from 1978 to 1993 were reprinted in three volumes that sold continuously for years.
A fascinating interview with Mr. McGuire appeared in Bondage Life 75.
For a short period, Carl McGuire also had a web feature titled "CineBonds", which can still be viewed in storage form at Archive.org. Carl McGuire's final full "Bound for Hollywood" appeared in the year 2000. The change was noted via a heartfelt editorial by BL's publisher R. Q. Harmon: "We
are compelled to make reluctant note of the retirement from our staff
of media columnist Carl McGuire.
"Bound for Hollywood" returned for the final issue of Bondage Life as Carl McGuire's feature "The Ultimate List".

[From a discussion on BriansPage.com:] Tuesday January 27 2009 Bound For Hollywood column [Re] Carl McGuire from the old Harmony Bondage Life magazines. That was one of my most anticipated sections as I waited for the next issue to come out. Funny how those small photos in his section were my world back then. Was he the first to focus on manstream DID's in a printed column? Has he ever had a DID site ... ? I don't know much about his age so I am not sure. In my book he started an era ... --detroitdave Tuesday January 27 2009 Re: Bound For Hollywood column In the olden days, before the Internet became accessible to the general public, people with our proclivities had to rely on magazines as the forum in which we expressed our ideas. I vividly recall eagerly awaiting the publication of each new Bondage Life issue, because I would immediately peruse Carl McGuire's "Bound for Hollywood" column. This was basically the only resource people such as ourselves had back then to inform us which movies we should rent at the local video store and which television programs we should record. His column was also illustrated with pictures of bound and gagged actresses. With the proliferation of the Internet, publications such as Bondage Life became obsolete and defunct. People such as ourselves, however, still retain fond memories of it and still appreciate Carl McGuire's quarterly column. We still remember going to the video store armed with knowledge gleaned from reading his column. The pleasure we felt when the scenes described vividly in his column would materialize on our television screens was unparalleled. Carl McGuire worked hard creating his quarterly column, watching hours of television and videos, and painstakingly compiling stills of the scenes that would be of interest to us, and composing accurate descriptions. He will not be forgotten. --Hadji |
